Poor nervous Blainers!

This bit always, always breaks my heart.

Anyone who ever says that this dance wasn’t hard for Blaine was clearly watching an entirely different show. This moment was so heartbreaking. Kurt says, very pointedly, to Blaine, “Isn’t it great that Prom is so inclusive this year?” *hint* *hint* *wink* *wink* Ask me to dance! Kurt isn’t being push about it. He knows it’s hard for Blaine to be there, after all. He knows better than anyone. But he’s also not subtle. Kurt really wants to dance with Blaine, and he’s hoping that Blaine will actually pluck up the courage to ask him, or at least give him a sign that he would say yes to Kurt asking.And what’s Blaine’s response? He agrees with Kurt in a chipper tone, and keeps looking sadly at all the couples dancing. 

We all joke about how oblivious Blaine is and, while that is certainly true in some cases, he’s not an idiot. The look he gives Kurt, just a quick nervous glance, says all we need to know. Blaine knows exactly what Kurt is hinting at, but he’s not there yet. He just can’t. He made it to Prom, which was a big step for him, but he’s not ready to stand out yet, not ready to do call attention to himself and Kurt and risk what happened to him the last time he went to a dance with a boy. So he side steps. He pushes the conversation forward and doesn’t ask Kurt to dance. 

This moment between them is so short, and yet so very important to understanding how much Kurt inspires Blaine. Blaine makes it to Prom, but he won’t dance with his boyfriend. He’s still too scared. And yet, when he sees Kurt’s strength and courage, his determination not to let others bring him down no matter how hard they try, suddenly everything clicks. When Blaine asks Kurt to dance, I imagine he’s still utterly terrified. But that doesn’t matter anymore. He has Kurt, and together, they’re strong enough to face whatever comes at them. None of the bad stuff matters, because the good stuff is so much more important. Blaine takes all the fear he had earlier that night and pushes it away so that he can finally have what both he and Kurt have wanted all night: just one dance with each other.
